if your fish is stressed at all, for example if he is being chased he may not color up for awhile. Ive had some nics stay dull in coloration forever. but if you can give them a tank where they are top dog you will see him turn into a beautiful specimen. both male and female color up nicely.

My nic was starting to color up at 3", but I took out the firemouth that the nic would always flare up with. Firemouth was being a terror so took him back to the store. Now my nic has lost some of his color. kinda the opposite
