I got this from our LFS last time and was wondering if it was a trimac or a low grade flowerhorn. Thanks!

When dealing with situations like this, always assume it's a flowerhorn. The chances of it being a pure trimac is slim to none. The only real way to get a trimac these days is through reputable sellers.

^agreed, we get a thread like this every week but i must say this is the only one that acctually looks like a trimac

looks trimac to me but this is true, that unless you get fish with an F number, whos lineage can be traced back to the wild, it is almost impossible to tell between the two.

This is because many corporate farms get "trimac" cichlids from a big tank that contains both "Trimacs" and low grade flowerhorns. In fact you can see this on wholesale lists, I have seen "golden trimac" come up several times from different places, and these are most assuredly flowerhorns.

This is the same problem you get distinguishing the midas or the red devil in wholesale stock.

However, if your fish does indeed have FH blood, it is probably something like 90% trimac. Whether this makes a difference to you or not would be a matter of personal taste.

Though essentially a ZZ is a "fancy trimac", just like RT are "fancy texas" just like goldfish are "fancy carp" and guppies may or may not be hybrid endlers.

The question is "do you care?"

That's what a Trimac looks like.

100% traits of the Trimac fish. But then you'll have ppl wanna look for something they can't see so they can discredit the fish.

I agree this fish closely resembles a Trimac, but cmon, the chances of actually getting a legit Trimac in any regular fish store is pretty much nonexistent. I'm not trying to descredit the fish, I'm being logical.

Its not about discrediting the fish, its about keeping the genepool unpolluted. Some people like flowerhorns, some people like purebreeds. If the fish looks good, I could care less. What I really like however, is the OPTION to choose which I keep. If the OP were to breed this fish & distribute the fry as trimacs, when it is likely a flowerhorn it could cause alot of problems.

Responsible fishkeeping is to lean towards hybrids for certain kinds of fish(trimacs/flowerhorns & middevils/citrinellum) regardless of its traits, unless bought from a reputable source.

@ the OP. Thats going to be a great wet-pet when grown! Lots of potential for glass-banging!
