Hello all. I picked this fish up the other day from a reputable LFS. It was sold to me as a Midas cichlid, but the guy specializes in Africans, not C/S Americans. I'd like to show the fish, so I'm asking, does this look more like a Midas or a Red Devil?? It has the fatter body like I think the Midas should, but it also has pretty thick lips, that look more V-shaped than U-shaped from the top (in my unprofessional opinion)

Also, not sure if this guy is male or female. Does that make a difference? Thanks for any help!

+1 midas, wanna say male too.

I say hybrid.... has devil features as well... unless bought from a reputable source they should be treated as hybrids...

+1 unless it is from a reputable breeder I would assume it is a hybrid.

Like I said, I did get it from a reputable guy, but his specialty is African cichlids. He wanted to use this fish as a breeder, but it kept killing all of its potential mates. So hybrid aside, more like a Midas or more like a Red Devil?

The guy may be reputable with africans, but S/CA's are another ball game. Can he tell you where he got it? I know a guy in Vegas whose specialty is Saltwater and he is very knowledgable. However, he has Midevil's labled as Jewel cichlids. You have to be careful with people who specilize in one thing and test their knowledge. Sometimes that leaves them lacking in another.

That being said, I am going with Midevil as well. That doesn't mean the fish is not any good. One of the coolest I have ever had was a Midevil.
