Hey guys. I suck at Identifying geos, so I figure I'd let the pros here do it :D. Got the best pictures I could muster with his constant moving. Not sure if you can see it in the pics, but he does have a second large spot on his right side(idk if this helps ID or if he's just got a weird spot). His fins are all beginning to grow trailers.

I was also hoping someone could let me know when red head tapajos are supposed to get their fin colors as well as the red coloration of the head. I've had these since they were fry at about 1". They eat like animals, but, man they grow slow. Anyway, one of them already has vivid fin coloration and has a bit of red on his head as you can see in the pic. His siblings are showing a little fin coloration, but it is not nearly as vivid. They don't have any red on their head either. Just wondering if the colored one is blooming early, or if it's too late to expect the others to get the red on their heads(they are about 4 months old at 3")...:irked:

Thanks in advance guys :)

I'm not sure how the second lateral spot plays a part in the identification - a better trained eye would be able to tell you. To me it looks like G altifrons.

As far as the coloration on the red heads - that may be a dominant male just coloring up ahead of his siblings, but again a better eye than mine may be able to tell you better.

G altifrons and geophagus red head.

Lateral spot is a little too big for canonical G. altifrons, but I don't know what else it could be. G. sp. "Altamira" perhaps? I had one briefly but he's in the freezer now....and I don't want to look...

Like Jag said it's probably a dominance issue with the orange heads. The rest will catch up soon. Below is an old picture of a group of juvies I grew out - same situation.

Finally, I think the Geos would appreciate it if you change the substrate to sand...

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't think he was an altifrons because of the spot as well. He does look a lot like the geo sp. altamira. Just compared him to a few pics I found. Good call! I'm probably going to change the substrate. I have to stop procrastinating. It's not a fun thing to do

I have the same thing going with my orangheads now, I got them 4 months ago, came in about 1.5-2" they are about 3.5" now and only a couple are showing red as well as dominance (out of 14) the rest are looking pretty plain, with just a little red on their top fins. Hopefully they will grow out of this stage quickly, I cant wait to see their beautiful colors!
