I recieved this guy free today at my Lfs. I just happened to be there when it arrived with its former owner. I'm new to pikes and I'm hoping to get an Id on it. Its about 14" and pretty placid right now. I'm hoping it keeps that it stays that way. Its really shy right now.

Its tank mates are: 2 12" oscars, a 9" mono peacock bass, 16" common pleco, 6" gold nugget pleco, and a 8" lima shovelnose. The tank size is 230.

Is there any special care I should give this guy?

Sorry for the bad pics. It didn't want to leave the cover of the wood. First pic is of it. Second of it and its new friends.

Looks like a Johanna. I have one. But its much smaller.

Mine is around 9", it was shy at first (like the first DAY). Now it keeps my 13" Oscar in check. LOL

Peanut Power will know for sure. I'm sure he'll be along in a bit

Guy? GUY? That's a girl I believe. :grinno:

The silver/white band in the dorsal fin. I'd lean towards johanna as well, but my speciality is the dwarf pikes, not the huge boys. Or in this case, girls.

id say it looks more like a ven, since there is a spot on the tail. johannas dont have a caudal spot.

I would lean towards venezuelan as well. I'm not a lugubris expert, but I have a ven myself, and they share a lot of characteristics.

if it has a caudal spot, it is my understanding that it is not a johanna then and most likely a venezuelan.
