Is it a hybrid? I rescued it. When I first got him he was so sick, skinny and colorless that I thought he was a really faded green terror. Now I think he's a hybrid .. He was in a tank with a few convicts. I'm really diggin the colors on the back fins and tail. He even has red on his forehead now too.
http://twitpic.com/49mevf I'm just not much of a cichlid keeper yet.

Thanks school of mfk'ers

Thats a 100% Jack Dempsey. The reason its not spotted all over is its a female, the spangles on the gill plate also tell its female. Vertical bars are a sign of stress.

Ok I see it now..after look ing at about 20 jack dempsey pics. HE's come a long way though! I think I'm just excited to see some color in this guy.

Your HE is actually a SHE, I guarantee it. I've never seen a Male JD lacking body spangles that badly with such prominant gill plate spangles. Kudos for rescueing her, glad she's in a good home.

If you would like a second opinion on the sex of your fish your welcome to post in the cichlids section under central and south american cichlids sub-category. There are some very knowledgeable individuals hanging around there that I'm sure would be glad to assist you in any way they can.

A She you say... Welll then, She's beautiful... and getting moreso by the day.
It's strange that at the lfs I haven't been interested in these guys but after watching this one get more healthy, filling out and showing colors, I have a new appreciation for them. Thanks for the info !!
