I believe they are getting dark to due to breeding. What do you think? Is this how they look?

Any info would help.

Red Belly...I have several tanks full of them and have been trying to set up to Breed. These two I just picked up not too long ago and was not even trying to breed them but they are much darker than all my others.

A little but this case is just by accident. I am actually setting up a 125 right now to attempt. I hope these guys are ready to roll. I am getting way too eager.

hi depending on there age and there heads will get alot darker when they ready and be warned pal they will have anywere to 700 to 5000 babys i hope u no tat and if any other piranhas are in the tank the mother will destroy them the father will sit and mind them , they should slap tails and play (breeding) lol and when she ready the father will rub againts her and out they will pop a little bit of info for u they are going to be alot of babys and i hope u have a massive tank to accomidate them good luck on being a daddy of up to 5000 kidz lol

I highly doubt the parents will destroy all the other fish. Dark coloration is just mature colors. & they don't always turn blk when they spawn. Also no way you'll have anywhere near 5000 babies. GL

Their chimples don't look very nice, maybe throw some salt in there, bump up the temp and ensure they have enough space and feel comfortable... you will find out very quickly if they are breeding or not when they start doing their mating dance.

As Bruner247 said, they might just be older or have those colors, darker colors don't always mean mating; but just in case I would be ensuring water parameters are very good so you would have the best chances of breeding and survival. Might also want to look at blackwater extract, or stimulate rainy season with a little cooler water changes.

I appreciate the input to all who have posted. I actually have these two in a 44 gallon tall hex so I am cycling another tank in my basement. Its a 125 gallon long. I have two 75 gallon tanks with 5 adult red bellies in each and two 55's with several 3" RB's....I am working hard and fast to upgrade all tanks bigger to accomadate the needs of the fish. I am doing this as a hobby. I am in Omaha, NE and just dont have the budget to get the 180 gallon or 200+ gallon tanks and do not see that many larger tanks here for sale second hand. As I continue to work on this awesome hobby I will update with pics and info as I learn through trial and error. I will try the blackwater extract. I actually have a waterfall simulated with a power filter and have altered my feeding schedule.

Thanks again!
