Last saturday we had a brown out and unfortunately our harddrive blew. we lost hundreds of gigibites worth of pictures etc... no backup. i lost tons of great fish pictures that would have been great for articles...
LESSON LEARNED back up ANYTHING important CONSTANTLY!!!! it could be a LOT worse then pictures. harddrives WILL die! it IS a reality and WILL happen to you! backup data and you will be safe.
Sorry for the vent

What is a brown out???
When the power dims, but isn't totally cut like in a black out

My laptop's harddrive just died a few weeks ago. Luckily, it was still under warranty, but I lost some stuff. Now I've gotten an external HD to back things up and I also keep really important stuff in my personal drive on the school's servers. Fingers crossed all 3 wont die at once....

thats sucks mate. luckily i havent had any hard drive fail on me cos i go out of my way to replace my pc every couple of years once the warranty runs out. i do back up on to memory sticks and dvd-rw's and i am planning on getting a external HDD.

It will cost but data recovery is possible on broken drives, by cost I mean a lot.

I've never really lost anything that important as I always try to back up as I go, recently my external driver had a moment at lost quite a bit of data and I've been reluctant to use it since even though it's been fine for a few months now, ended up formatting that pc after the time and I've lost about 1/2 gig of old graphic stuff I worked on a year ago, I swear it was backed up on a hard copy but I'm missing one folder, and that one is corrupt on the external

+1. The motor from the drive is dead, but all of the information is still burned into the HD. Even best buy will do it, but I think they rape for payment (literally or figuratively: that's for you to decide). It depends how much this stuff is worth to you. External HD are just as vulnerable to brown outs as computers, so unless you turn it off after every time you use it... that won't help. A UPS (uninterupted power supply) or a SPS (switched power supply, what most "UPSs" really are) is the best way to stop that, some really good surge protectors will have tiny battery backups to help with brown-outs.

I'm a web developer and I used to never backup. I haven't really got burnt by it yet but I decided to go ahead and buy a Time Capsule for my Mac (http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/). It's probably the best thing ever. Not only does it backup my whole computer, it keeps multiple backups. So if I want to get something from a month ago I can go back to that day and get it. It does it all automatically, you just set it and forget it.
