I have a 75 gallon (pictured in a different thread)... I originally planned on doing it as a female betta sanctuary... but seeing as how I added a blackghost knife fish into my tank and im pretty sure its injuring my bettas (I have all but 1 left), I want to get a fish that will grow reasonably large. I love to get them tiny and watch them grow to a full size pet.

Here's the fish I currently have in the tank.. i'd LIKE to keep them, but would RISK having them gobbled up by a growing fish...

4 Kuhli loaches (2 black, 2 striped)
2 bandit cory cats
1 pleco (5 inches and growing)
1 blackghost knife fish (6 inches)
1 female betta
1 headlight tetra
1 white cloud,
7 neons + 1 cardinal (adding 7 more neons soon to make a 15 fish grand total)
3 black neons
3 glowlight neons

I want to get something that I can find relatively small (4-6 inches) and have him grow up. The BGK will grow i'm aware, but seeing as how he's already big, nocturnal, and hides, I think he'd be ok in the tank with a bigger swimmer middle ground fish...

I wanted an Arowana, but I'm sure he'd gobble everything up.... and Oscar's are just ugly to me. Does anyone have any good recomendations? I like a fish with good personality, swims often, and will do ok with other smaller species. I've seen some GIANT 2ft+ gourami's that supposedly wont even touch feeder goldfish...but the gourami is also ugly as sin. I thought about angelfish, but they dont get much larger than 6"..... What is there I can get!

PS - FRESHWATER. duh

If you get pretty much anything that is 4-6 inches already it is goin to chomp on those fish. You could get a variety of large cichlids, but probably only one or two of them. You could try maybe a jaguar cichlid or a pike cichlid. I love my pikes they are the best fish I have ever had.

Wait...your going to keep the BGK even thought you know how alrge it will get? If that is the case say goodbye to your other fish.

I would get rid of the BGK, get more WCMM and maybe try a peaceful cichlid. A geophagus species perhaps.

I have geos and rainbows which are awsome fish and definatly something I would recomend if you want to get rid of the BGK.

Try a couple banded loaches (Botia hymenophysa) they are pretty, peaceful, and get up to 10"s long and grow a bit faster than clown loachs, Hora's or skunk loachs get around 4", horsefaced and Kessler's loachs are also good choices and reach about 8-9" long.

i have my bgk with gouramis and havent had a problem. mine isnt very aggresive but also not full grown if you bui;d it a nice cave or somthing comfortable to hide in it will probobly leave your other fish alone. how big is ur knife???

Anything that grows large in that tank will eat the smaller fish, as will the black ghost knife over time. I think even a gourami or angelfish would eat a neon if it could catch one.

You might want to re-think your options.. I thought about this for a second and couldnt really think of anything that will get large but not aggressive. Juruparis are a good suggestion however, or possible some of the larger 'Aequidens' family members that are non-aggressive. I would suggest Discus but they aren't very hardy and might get skittish with all those other tankmates, including a nocturnal dweller like the BGK.

Like I said before, add about 10 more of each to those schools of Tetras, and you may be very happy with the outcome. You will also have alot better chance of survival for these fish in larger schools.

The loach suggestion was a good one.. Also, have you considered a 'fancy' pleco instead of the common one.. Get yourself a Gold Nugget Pleco and grow it out!

I forgot that the banded loachs harrass other bottom fish.

I tried Archer fish once, I had a really hard time with them arnt they brackish water? Anyways, I agree anything that gets really big will start to eat your smaller fish, you might just want to stick with fish that stay smaller or try a few Rams or something, that or get a smaller tank for all your small fish.
