I need some advice from you crenicichla afficionados. I plan on setting up a 40 gallon breeder (36x18). I have two definite tankmates at this point - a 5" royal pleco and a 5" SA bumblebee cat (voracious).

I want a single pike in this tank as the centerpiece. It will be the only cichlid in the tank.

I would like a pike that maxes out at about 6" and is as spangled as possible. I am quite colorblind so I do not necessarily appreciate color, but like spangles. It has to be big enought to not get eaten by the bumblebee. Also something that is available pretty regularly.

Please advise.

Any sp. of dwarf pike would do well in a 40 breeder. The only problem is the dwarf creni have been scarce lately. I seem to have luck around this time of year finding pikes at my LFS. The last time I checked Jeff Rapps had some Regani on his list, so you may won’t to grab one before there sold out. The problem is once you get one crenicichla than you are bound to get another, and another, and another lol. Good luck.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I have never taken a look at Aquabid before. Looks like there is an active crenicihla seller not too far away from me.

I have not settled on a 40 gal yet. I may keep my 125 and make it my Amazon community, including some smaller crenicichla.

Aquabid is great for finding fish that might not be sold locally in your LFS'. You just have to take the shipping cost into account to make sure you're not overpaying for something you might be able to get locally.

I vote keep the 125g tank. That's what I've got set up right now (2 of them actually). One is currently a South American/Amazon community tank, but I'm thinking about clearing out the smaller fish and making it a crenicichla/geophagus community type tank.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Once you get a creni, you'll be hooked!
