Please sex this GT: M/F?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like a male, females will have a dark blotch on the lower part of the gill plate, beneath the eye.

Male - easy to tell at that size what they are. Usually it's hard to tell visually the sex of a GT until the 4" mark. I was expecting a picture of a 1.5" GT when I saw this thread.

This GT isn't as aggressive as other male GT's i've come across.

This guy is pretty docile and isn't much of a glass banger at all.

Also the forehead doesn't have much of a development of the KOK

I think there is still time for that to grow in and aggression to increase though.

I would agree with male as well. And a nice looking one at that. Keep it up!

its all about the genes. some GT's don't colour up til the 5" mark, some people have fully coloured 3" males with little koks. depends on the parents.

and as for the behaviour it can vary a lot from cichlid to cichlid, I've never found GT's to be any more aggressive than say a JD or a jag, in my experience they mix pretty well. but again this is all just subjective.

the easiest way to sex any large cichlid is to simply check its vent.

if what is protruding out of its vent comes to a point, its a male...

if it is rounded, its a female.

hope that helps!
