Hello all,
I have been in the hobby for sometime now, and have kept a lot of different fish. Lately I have been interested in keeping GArs. I came across 2 at the local LFS, I believe they are Florida Gars..currently they are about 6 inchs or so...
I realise they grow quite large. Can someone please suggest a tank dimension to successfully keep these. I was thinking of a 6x2x2 tank should be enough...? Please comment, but please let me know the minimun size of the tank.
I was thinking of housing them in 3x2x2 tank for the time being till they grow out, can someone give me a rough idea as to how soon would I need a the 6 footer....?
Also can these be housed with similar sized RedTail Catsfish..?? (These will be moved to a 30ftx20ftx5ft Pool when they outgrow this...)
Cheers for all the help..
Thank you.

I think you'd be better off with a standard 240...8x2x2 until they grow out enough for the pond. The gars would have to be substantionally larger than the RTC for that mix to work out IMO.

I would suggest a 6x2.5x2 or bigger for gars, so that you can house them for a long time.

the 6 x 2 x 2 (180 gal.) tank should work for quite a while if they are in fact florida gar. they seem to grow to around 14-16 inches fairly fast (1-1.5 years). after that they tend to slow down substatially.

i would not keep the gar w/ the RTC's. gar do tolerate tankmates well, but RTC's tend to make meals out of fish of equal size from time to time.
