I am worried about my pleco becoming to large for the tank eventually, I had got him off of a friend who was giving away his fish from his fishtank and did not realize he required a such a large tank. He is now 6 years old and 6 inches long, I have had him in a 10 gallon for a while but he got to big so i recently bough a 25 gallon tall aqaurium. What should I do when he becomes to large for the new tank?

I did not realize that it was so harmful to the fish, nor did i realize how big of a tank he needed. You always hear "Fish grow to the size of their tank." But know I know that their organs are stunted. I feel terrible but I will never buy a fish to small for my tanks again. A valuable lesson learned.

I'd feed it up and try get it as healthy as possible again. The 25g is nowhere near enough for a fish like that, but after six years in a 10g who knows how much more growing it will do. At the very least it will be an interesting experiment to see what sort of long term effects small tanks have on big fish. Start looking for someone with a larger tank who is willing to take it on.

If it is not deformed and appears healthy... do NOT attempt to kill it. While yes he is stunted...this doesn't mean he's sick. Another factor in his smaller size could be a lack of food. If he is just barely getting enough food..he won't grow much. Yes, he still needs a bigger tank. Perhaps try to offer more food for him too.

I had one once stay at 6-7 inches for a long time in a 75 with plenty of food...it happens.
