Pleco breathing air?

My pleco jets to the top and hits topwater for a mouthful of air every 10-30 minutes. and you can tell right before he does it because he lets out his old air. then hits topwater.

Whats he doing with this air?

Common pleco from wallmart/ black with some tannish spots/blotches. Kinda pretty.

You dont have enough dissolved oxygen in the tanks water column. stick in an air stone operated by an air pump. Also add a filter that is fully cycled with a strong current.

Or make sure your filter return flow is breaking/agitating the surface of your water.
