I always thought that Plecos only eat Algae, but my 9-10 inch guy eats everything!!!Flakes, pellets, shrimp,he even chewed up a feeder,is this common???I throw in 5-6 Algae discs every nite.
i dont think there is a pleco that lives soley on algae. a lot need protein, either from wood or meat, and they eat veggies like no tomorrow. it is odd however for a pleco to take a feeder. was it already dead? ive heard of plecos eating live fish occasionally but it is more once in a blue moon. ive heard galaxy sp. are prone to do that more than others, but there shouldnt really be a reason for it. plecos usually will only go after fish if they have a lack of protein
Actually, some plecos are CARNIVORE... Most Pseudacanthicus (as the galaxy), Leporacanthicus and Hypancistrus fit here. They're at least carnivore omnivores, what means they DON'T EAT ALGAE. Most species are omnivores, or herbivore omnivores... Actually I can't point a purely herbivore species.
