Hello,
I love plecos, but only have one so far. Just a big 11" gibbiceps. I have a 55 gallon that will be set up for Africans and I understand that plecos are very adaptable in water conditions. What type of attractive pleco that gets a decent size could live in this tank for a little while? (will be upgrading to 180 gallon tank soon-ish)

The Africans in the tank will be petros growing out. I like the gold nugget and royal plecos, do you think they would be a good fit? If not, which plecos would be? And by good size I mean 12-18 inches because if I get a pleco It will eventually be in a 180 gallon tank or if it doesn't fare well in my 55 it will be moved to my 75 gallon angel tank.

What kind of "africans" are you referring to? Rift lake (Malawi, Tanganyika) or west africa (Congo). I'm not sure if the GN or the royals will do well in the hard alkaline water of a rift lake set-up (some bristlenose may do fine). Congo water is similar to Amazon water, which is ok for the GN or royals.

Please read my initial post. I clearly state that petros will be the Africans in the tank and they are indeed a rift lake species. My water isn't too hard, around 7.7-8

Just to say that royal's are nice and I have one but they crap more than geese. Depending on your substrate and water circulation it might bug you. Can't go wrong with a gold nugget. vampire is my favorite though.

Then grab a vampire my friend you won't be disappointed. They are sometimes hard to come by in the fish shops but they might be able to order for you. Or you can try aquabid.
