pleco growth?

hey mfk, i was wondering, picked up a sailfin pleco couple weeks ago, he is only bout 5 cm long, im just wondering how long it will take him to grow to around 3 inches,

cause im worried if i get any fish while he is small, hes gonna be an expensive stack for someone ,

They have been known to grow fast in most cases. I would wait until he is bigger before buying other fish that might eat him.

Theyre pretty quick growers at small sizes. He should be around non snack size in no time! I hope you didnt pay a lot for that small of one tho :s

It's hard to tell, here in the US they come as low as $4.99

Less than a month. Mine went from under 5cm to over 4 inches in its first month in my tank. They grow extremely fast until they reach about 7-8 inches, then they slow down a little. I got mine in July '09 and it is now about 15 inches long.

Mine was $20 (but mine seems to be a bit different from the average sailfins sold at Petsmart), but I have no idea how much they regularly go for in Australia.

Feed it well and it could grow an inch per month.

Here in NZ they go for about $15NZ, but I know Australia has different import laws and they can't import a lot of cheap fish from the farms in Asia. Local breeders are the only source, and that makes many otherwise common plecos quite expensive.

If that's the going rate in Aussie, then that's what you have to pay for them.

If you feed them a lot of veggies they grow veeery fast. I had one that grew 2 inch the first month I had him.
