whats the difference between a plecostimus and a hypostimus? never herd of hypostimus until the other day i thought they were all plecos haha. if soemoen could clear this up for me it would be great. is it jsut another genus of sucker fish?

hypostomus is the genus name of some plecos, namely hypostomus plecostomus, where the name "pleco" comes along. however, their are several plecos on the market sold as "common plecos" that could be a variety of different species, and could only be distinguished externally by carefully examining their underside patterns.

yep and in the uk -none of those are hypostomus!:screwy:

The original "pleco" was Hypostomus plecostomus - hence the name "pleco".
Now nearly all 'common plecos' are Pterygoplichthys - usually P. pardalis.

Pterygoplichthys have 14-15 soft dorsal rays. Hypostomus have 7.

and different body shape and pattern and grow to different sizes and hypo is much more expensive.
