Can you pleco experts shed some light on this guy for me.

All I know about him is my mother-in-law had him in a 10 gallon tank from when he was only 1 inch long, and when he reached around 4 inches I took him off her hands and put him in my bigger tank. He is around 5 inches now and went from 1 inch to his current 5 inches in less than one year.

Please help me ID him and share any info about his breed as you can.

Thanks ;)

It's not Pardalis. They have semi-straight lines on their sides like a greater then or less then sign. Also their bellies have a circle like pattern. This one clearly has a wavy belly pattern which is a disjunctivus.

not to thread hijack but there's more then 1 common pleco species?

Yes, the 2 already mentioned... Pardalis and disjunctivus. The 3rd one is very different with a brownish color called a Hypostomus plecostomus.

IME they are slow growers. Your pleco will reach 20-24" but it could take a long time. Compared to other members of their family they also tend to be more herbivorous as adults. They still need a balanced diet of meaty and vegetable foods.

Disjunctivus and pardalis at least tolerate other plecos though. They also tend to completely ignore other fish. Some have issues with new tankmates, but by and large they are not bad too own. Their cousins tend to be more aggressive. Gibbiceps should never be considered as potential tankmates. They only reach 18" in length, but are extremely territorial. They will bully or straight up kill their competitors.

nice common pleco.. :)
