the SA/CA cichlid forum has a profile thread that i found useful, so i think the pleco forum should have a profile thread too. lets make this good so it can become a sticky!!

please type all profiles in this format:

Species: Scientific name (and L### if possible)
Common name:
maximum size:
(standard length is fine)
Sexing: (if possible)
Temperament:
Minimum tank size:
Diet:
(include here whether or not the pleco needs driftwood, and if its a carnivore or herbivore)
Water parameters: (include temperature, pH, preferred hardness levels, etc.)

Comments: (include any extra info about the pleco, such as odd behavior tendency to knock over wood and destroy plants, etc.)
Pictures:

Species: Panaque maccus
Common name: Clown pleco, Ringlet pleco (L162,L104,LDA22)
Maximum size: 4"
Sexing: Males develop odontodes on the tail.
Temperament: Very shy and reclusive. It is somewhat of an event to see one out and about, because they are rarely out during daylight hours. Peaceful towards all tankmates, though each individual in an aquarium does need its own cave and can easily be "kicked out" of a cave by other, more aggressive species.
Minimum tank size: 20high for a single specimen. 20long for a pair. can be kept in groups as long as each individual or pair has enough space and its own cave/hiding spot.
Diet: Needs driftwood to graze on just like all other plecos in the genus Panaque. It is omnivorous though it should be fed vegetables often. yams and cucumber are preferred.
Water parameters: 73*-82* F. / 23*-28* C.pH should be about neutral and water should be slightly soft.

Comments:
This pleco, like all wood-eating plecos, is very messy. aquariums containing several of these plecos should have strong filtration. It is easily bullied by other pleco species and is very peaceful. It also rarely ventures far from its cave. It hides often enough that specimens are sometimes very seldom seen in their aquariums.

I find this thread rather redundant with the formatting in the first post.

Like I said, it seems redundant. We already have a sticky thread for that. If it has to be based on experience, I am not sure the formatting allows us to distinguish how it is from experience.

maybe with the colavoration from all MFk memebers we could put pics to the profiles?

i got afew species my self and i would gladly post some pics for that purpose.

Great idea.

:iagree::iagree::iagree: it is a little redundant. But you bring up a very good point with the pictures. It would be very helpful for people to actually see pics. We should have pics with the profiles. that would be very efficient.

Thats what the "comments" section in this thread is for.
If we work on this and doo a good job we could probably get it done faster than the sticky is getting done, and we will have a better version to make into a sticky.

Scientific Name(s): Pterygoplichthys pardalis, Acipenser plecostomus, Hypostomus plecostomus, Hypostomus punctatus, Liposarcus multiradiatus, Liposarcus pardalis, Plecostomus plecostomus

Common Name(s): Common Pleco, Common Plecostomus, L023

Family: Loricariidae

Species Type: Plecostomus

Maximum Size: 15-18"

Life Span: 15 years

Natural Habitat: South American River Deltas

Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons for juvenile stage, 75 for adults

Tank Region: Bottom of tank.

Possible Tank Mates: An excellent community fish that can also hold it's own with large aggressive fish. Sometimes picked as a/the tankmate for Piranhas.

Description: Hypostomus plecostomus is often referred to as the Common Pleco, and is very widely available. Unfortunately, many beginning aquarists do not realize how big this fish will grow, nor do they realize that as the fish ages, it may become more agressive, especially to other plecos. It is a very hardy fish however, and is a nice addition to larger tanks. When of a proper size is able to hold its own with most other fishes. It is often thought of as only an algae eater, but while it eats algae very effectively, its diet should be supplimented with other foods, including sinking pellets, romaine lettuce, parboiled zucchini, sweet potato, squash, and green peas. Driftwood should be included in the tank. Plecos will often eat live plants in the tank. When purchasing a specimen, do not buy fish with hollow stomachs as this indicates the fish has not eaten recently, and will most likely not survive long after the trip home.
