Alright its the first time I've seen my pleco do this a few mins ago
my pleco was literally laying on his back ( on the gravel ) and my
initial thought was NOOOO!! haha I thought he was dead...

So I reached into the tank put my hand near him and he took off
to the other side of the tank where he then laid upright on the bottom
he seems to be moving around just fine now as well he also seems to
not like his algae wafers any more? seems to devour my plants plenty fine...

So the main question is are pleco's known to lay on their backs from time to
time? As I type now he is motivating around sifting through the rocks I guess.

My pleco has never done that I have noticed he'll close his eyes for a long time sometimes almost like he's sleeping.
My only guess is that maybe you had just turned your lights on or something or maybe he really was resting like that who knows plecos are funny like that

lol Vaine111 "I was thinking he wanted his belly rubbed"
that'd be neat a pleco who acts like a dog bahaha

haha yeah the lights were on though so my only thought would be he didn't want the
light shining down on him any more and he rolled over? lol crazy fish..

Mine did that but he was dead. He was about 9yrs old

Well he is actually still doing fine and I've not seen him like that again :|
Just thought I would update that he isn't dead or seem to be dying. =/

I have only noticed this behavior in my smaller species of pleco's. But they are usually hanging around a piece of driftwood and sort of just doze off and forget to keep their suction going.
