Never keep a common pleco in anything smaller than a 120 gallon. Even if it's just a baby. They create so much waste. Even a 120 will eventually become too small for one of those beasts

WHen you think about it. It's quite sad that most of the fish at the pet store are destined to die. Like goldfish people all want to keep them in bowl but nothing could be further from the truth for a goldfish. Bala shark. Who have a 8 feet tank at home for a school of them. Not many people have a 500 gallon i am sure. Unless you are a monsterfishkeeper.

you can keep plecos in smaller tanks with enough water turnover and water changes, you are right they they create alot of waste though which is counterproductive for why most people get them.

They help keep the glass cleaner than normal, and they force you to clean/change water more often. I'm not seeing much of a downside.

Sure, they get huge after awhile, but since this forum is for MONSTERS, seems fitting! :headbang2

Have one in my 55g (about 8") and will move him to the 150 when he gets bigger (around 10-12"). Then will be getting a Gold Nugget for my 55 since they stay smaller.

Works for me! :D

I totaly agree but does tank size matter as much as water quality?

Tank size impacts water quality. A small overstocked tank will require more frequent water changes than a bigger lightly stock tank.

unless i get a bigger tank or someone takes it off my hands, i'll have to let my common go into the stream near my home...

dont worry, it came from that stream anyway.

ive decided i like royals a lot better.

Definitely do NOT do this. Thanks to this kind of mentality, Snakeheads are no longer available. Give it to a LFS.

Be careful, those big one can horn you and they will shred nets.

Hi,

Looking for your advice pleco experts, I recently (4 days) got sailfin and gold nugget for my 180 gal tank, both 2'' in size. Sailfin adapted quickly, eats well, hides in the driftwood etc. but gold nugget does not seem to be well. I tried to feed both with algae pellets.Gold nugget sits on the walls close to aeration or heater and does not seem to eat. I'm thinking to try feeding them with bloodworms and may be isolating the sailfin for some time. What do you think?

Thanks,
