Have heard that larger, carnivorous, plecos can attach to softshells and flyriver turtles. Is this true? I saw an albino soft shell that would be great in the tank but the guy told me that the pleco would kill it!? :feedback: please

It's true in alot of cases. Once a pleco gets the taste for it's tankmates there's no stopping it. And, if you happen to get a pleco that doesn't harass a FRT, chances are the FRT will sample the pleco. Turtles eat fish. All of the boards have scores of 'turtle killed my..." accounts.

Thought FRT ate mostly veggies?

if you do get a soft shell make sure your gravel is really clean they burrow in it and are very prone to fungal infections. i had one in my tank for quite some time. they are awesome.

They are omnivores. Here's a diet description from the CITES documentation on FRTs:

Carettochelys is omnivorous. In the dry season, it feeds predominantly on fruits, seeds and leaves of a wide variety of riverside vegetation, including Ficus facemosa, Syzygium forte and Pandanus aquaticus, and mangroves (Sonneratia species) in both Australia and New Guinea. When available, aquatic plants such as Vallisneria sp., Najas tenuifolia, and algae are also eaten. Molluscs, crustaceans, fishes, bats and other mammals also feature in the diet, the latter presumably indicating scavenging. The wide range of food eaten provides great scope for opportunism, and the diet varies greatly between localities, according to the foods available
(Georges and Wombey 1993, Georges et al. 2000).
