Hey everyone, I have a 180g with driftwood and the driftwood is beginning to get covered in algae. My current stocklist is:
9 bichirs 7-16"
1 wolf fish 6"
4 blood red parrot fish 6-8"
1 fire eel 13"
1 sun catfish 6"

My question is, are there any plecos that will eat the algae but not suck the slime coat off my bichirs? I've heard of plecos that tend to stick to bichirs and suck off their slime coat, leading to bichir's death. Thanks in advance :)

They answer is maybe for all plecos apparently it doesn't work alot but I also see it work alot...so you just take your chances

I've heard panaques work if they have wood to chew on but they also don't do too good on algae so kind of defeats the purpose, I'd just get a magnet cleaner

Yeah the Royal is a type of Panaque. They would probably be you best bet for the wood in your tank but they produce huge amounts of waste more so then say a common pleco but I would assume they would be the safest to put with your bichir's considering they only really mess with wood and veggies if provided. If you got algae on the glass then a cleaning magnet would be the way to go. Panaque's don't really mess with algae unless it's on the wood there trying to munch on.

I've kept an adonis pleco with my bichirs without problems. It always just hung out in its cave under the driftwood and even when the bichirs would chill right next to it, it left the alone. Stayed like that for about 6 months until the pleco died randomly. No idea why.

Is there a certain size of royal pleco that I should get so it won't get eaten? My LFS had 4" royal plecos for $20. And filtration is no problem, I have a fluval fx6 and AC 110

Hows that wolf fish? I would worry something to small would be harassed by the wolf. The bigger the better. Keep in mind Royals grow very slow so got to plan ahead for the other fish eventually out growing it.

It's a white tip wolf fish, he's pretty calm so I never really worry about him :) do u recommend a certain size I should start with?
