Ello there

Picked up my christmas tank today, its a 60 gal, very very long and tall.

So thinking of putting a pleuro or couple in there, after growing them out in my 29gal. I did measure the 60 and the pleuro should be able to swim as adult...though am worried about the tank wideness, its only 12inches. I love pleuros colors and size (used to have a young micro). would use my 29 as a community display(small fishies) tank after. The tank is in the kitchen, quite far from any noise or quick movements.

My other plan was to make the 60 into a display community tank(small fishies) and put bleheri in the 29 gal. Never really heard much bout bleheri other then they need winter temps, are small and lazy. Can they have tankmates like fire ell or sengal bichir?

Only fish I have had so far micro snakehead(passed on), bichirs & ropefish, cichlids, community fish.

Other choice would be assorted oddballs in 60 gal if snakehead didn't work out...

Any suggustions?

Pleuros are open water swimmers and 60g is way to small. In many sites, they labeled pleuro's max size to 16" but I've seen them get up to 18-20 inches. If you wanna keep a pack of them, I'll recommend getting a 180g or even bigger as they are active type of snakeheads. I too is from BC, Canada and been keeping snakeheads and other monsterfish.

^ what he said...lol

Bleheris are great. They get some awesome coloration if kept well.
They are sub-tropical though, so bare that in mind.
Here is one of my breeding pair:

Hi, thanks for comments. Was worried about the width of the tank, more-so now if they get larger then 16''. *sighs* do love pleuro looks though, any snakehead smaller other then bleri with similar bright colors and actitivy level?

Are there any fish that are also sub-tropical like bleheri to be used for dither fish? Bleheri aren't very active right? Are they more a day or night swimmer?

Also, can anyone suggest any other large oddballs? I do love fire-eels, black ghosts, arowana, oscar, snakeheads...tryign to figure out what can fit happily, 60 gal tank is 12'' wide, 47'' long, 22'' tall. 29gal is 12'' wide,30'' long, 17'' tall.

thanks

Get a bigger tank around 210g+. No adult size arowana of any species can fit in that 60g. Fire eels will also get large and will become intimidated in a 60g tank and that will lead from bailing out. An oscar will produce a lot of waste and that 60g will get polluted fast and that will lead to the black ghost knife being unconfortable and may lead for skin infection. As for the snakeheads, that would depend on which snakehead you want but not those that grows bigger than 12". You would likely be able to keep the dwarf species of snakeheads. Plus you're here in BC, Canada. None of those other dwarf snakeheads are available as commonly seen here are Channa Bleheri.

I'm setting an order for snakeheads from my Indian supplier. But it's not gonna happen this month as it's freezing cold anytime soon. Maybe around Feb-March it will be just the right temp for those sub-tropical fish.

actually i've found my bleheris to be fairly active, i've always thought that bleheris are one of the more active dwarf snakeheads. If you want other dwarf snakeheads, well, go look them up, there are quite a few, some with more colors than others. Bleheris though, are pretty good with other fish that they can't fit in their mouth so if you're looking to put other fish in there just keep in mind that they need temperatures of 18-22C and that the fish you have listed above aren't going to do well in those subtropical temperatures

Thanks.

Bleheri seem a good choice since they seem to have good color/activy from what I am hearing. They would have their own tank, I won't mix them with other oddballs due to the temp change. What is the best size tank for bleheri pair, 29gal or 60...think I heard of someone keeping in 10?

Still gotta think about tank set-ups I suppose.
