Get the thick/wide Teflon tape
and then put silicone over that, then tighten it up...
when you want to remove the cap just twist it out as usual...it will only be a little more resistance, but no problem...
I do this to all my bulkheads and threaded PVC fittings, with no problem
and most of all NO leaks...;) :thumbsup:

No problem...Phulltank57 turned me on to this method and made a believer out of me too...I used to be a gasket/o-ring kinda guy, but this really does work better than anything I have ever used. And it will disassemble easily, as well...;) :thumbsup:
 
I have plumbers putty holding the seal on a patch I put on one of my plywood tanks. Been holding for almost a year with no problems.
 
I read one of these big tank build threads where the guy had trouble with his bulkheads leaking until he used plumbers putty instead of teflon tape. Never saw any "omg my fish all died from putty" posts after that.
