So I picked up 3 20 longs over the weekend. All are drilled for intake and return with bulkheads. What I'd like to do is to plumb all three, or at least 2 to a single canister filter. These are going to be FH growout tanks.

First question, will it work?
second question, what size canister should I be looking into that would have enough azz to push a decent flow to them? (I have a Fluval 404 sitting around doing nothing)

How are you going to arrange them?
I would build a stand 3 high, use both bulkheads on the top 2 to feed water to the one below it.pump water from the bottom tank to the top and let it flow down.
Bottom or back drilled?Either way set up the flow so it cant drain the top tanks past an inch or so below the surface.

Well, where I'm setting up my fish room there's a large L shaped workbench in place already, it's VERY sturdy. It's built so I can put tanks top and bottom.

The tanks are drilled in the back. If you're looking at the tank the intake is drilled in the lower right, and the return in the upper left corner of the tanks. Now on the intake hole there's a PVC 90 attached to a 6-8" length of PVC with a strainer on the end.

Here's a pic of the actual tank.

Frosty,
Run them into a common wet/dry. That is how they were originaly set up and you can use flex tube for all the plumbing. You shouldnt need any more than 6-800 gph pump on all 3.
Option 2 is the waterfall method, 3 tall, top gets fresh water next tank gets to tanks drainoff and so on.

Lemme know if you need any help getting it going, I can send you pics of my 4 tank rack with a common sump.

You have any w/d's left?

You could just make a wet/dry. Check out the DIY threads. You can make one yourself for $20-30 bucks.

I think that's what I'll end up doing, maybe using one of those 20's, have it running the other 2

That'll probably be your best bet, otherwise you could do the Fluval with 3 shut-off valves to tailor the flow to each tank.
