Plumbing setup for drilled tank

I am setting up 2 canisters on my 180g tank and I had a plumbing question. Where should I put a union in the plumbing? Right now I have the bulkhead, then the pvc tubing, then a valve then the adapters to get it to a 5/8" barb. Should I put a union between the valve and all the adapters that connect to the barb? I guess if it was above the valve it would be useless huh ?

You want it to where when you shut off the ball valve you can disconnect it and water won't come out.

tank ====> ball valve ===> union|union ====> filter

also you may want to step the 5/8 barb to a 1" barb for better flow.

The input on my 2217 is 5/8, thats why I went with that... should I of gone bigger? I thought since the canister was made to use that diameter that I would just stick with it. Thanks for the replies!!
