Hey, im gonna be setting up a 40 breeder soon and i wanted to do a 10 gallon sump. I was wondering what size piping/drilling would i need for this size tank. Id probably be using a pump that is 528gph

What type of drain are you planning on using? If you are doing a multi setup like a bean animal then you would be smaller than if you want a single regular drain.

The tank above is a 40 breeder I used as part of my sump system (the planted part)
It had 2 half inch drains, you can sort of see the plumbing below, because it was drilled on the bottom, for stand pipes. It had 1 half inch pipe sending water too the tank.
Because it was planted, with only the two 1/2" pipe outflows, I had to be diligent keeping the pipes clear. (I brushed them out regularly) They could be easily plugged with plant debris, snails, a dead fish, and overflow the tank if plugged.

What size pump did you use?

I'm going to do something like this a 40b I'm going to drill.

1" drains and 3/4" return

I've got a 1.5" on my 40b. Just the bit I had on hand at the time. Half of the flow going to my 180 goes through it though. Gestimating around 600-700gph. Its on 1 drain from the 180.

My pump was 2400 GPH, because the 2 sumps (the 40 gal for plants (the one above) and 1 (a 50 gallon tank) for mechanical stuff like pumps, heaters, and mech media, and biofiltration) handled 4 tanks all around 100 gallons each.
I controlled flow using PVC ball valve to each tank.
