Hello.
I have a Quiet One 5000 submersible pump with a rated 1300 GPH. With a 5ft head loss to the top if aquarium, its closer to 1000 GPH.

The pump has a 1" MPT output nozzle. Should I use 1" PVC and 1" 45 degree elbows, 1" ball valve throughout until I reach the output nozzle? Or should I use 1.25" ?
Thx!

I would go larger than 1" because the inside of a 1" ball valve is smaller than 1" and would further restrict flow.

I use 1" everything on my q16000's but I don't use ball valves on the outputs. I valve my drains instead.

That being said, I upsize my checks up to 1 1/2" on my pump outputs.

So should I just use 1"pvc on everything except using couplings to increase to 1.25" ball valve and then go back to 1" to complete the outlet nozzle? Thx.

That would probably work pretty well. Nothing wrong with upsizing your return lines in my experience other than a little added cost for larger fittings.

Sounds like a plan!

I used clear vinyl 3/4" from my laguna 1500. no valves, no angles, just a gentle S curve. I'd just use 1" vinyl.

That's how my 120 is setup. 1" flex out with a 1 1/2" swing check. Works really well.

Below is Reeflo's recommendation for pipe size for a given flow rate. You are kinda in a 'tweener situation. If you really want to maximize flow, using 1.25" plumbing will be better than 1", but it's not going to make a huge difference either way.

After all that, my 1.25" DIY PVC plumbing can't keep up with my submersible pump as I have to obstruct the flow 25% with my ball valve.
