I would like to plump my 180 gallon with 55 gallon sump directly into my house to ease water changes. I think I have a theory since the over flows are gravity fed. Just looking for some insight or possible adjustments to me idea. Any and all comments or suggestions are welcome.

I have two 1” drain pipes. I would put a diverter valve on both of the drain pipes. This would effectively divert the water from going into the sump and instead to a drain that is plumbed into the house main drain. This of course would only last until the pump emptied all the water in the sump (approx 25-30 gallons). That is only about a 15% WC. Not to mention the dangers of running the pump dry and exposing the heater to dry conditions.

My idea is I would plumb a water line w/ Chlorine filter that would run into the sump and the water would be heated them pumped up to the tank. I would first find out an approx # of gallons that is being pumped per min by the incoming water. I would empty the tank 1/4 and then time how long it takes the pump to fill it back up. Once I have that # lets call it 15 mins I would divert the overflow/ drain to exit out the house drain and run the new filtered water into the sump for 15 mins effectively doing a 1/4 water change.

Seems ok in theory but I was hoping some of you might see some flaws or recommend an easier way to do an auto water change.

I did something similar to your idea before I knew aobut drip systems.

It run for 2 years, when I rebuilt the sump I added it to the drip system. It's much easier, cheaper and less points of failure. I still use the mixing valve on the drip system and have since added a filter to the line.
