Hi all,
Let me start by intoroducing myself-
My name is wilso and i am from the land down under! i have been a long term fish keeper over the past 19 odd years on and off. I've mainly kept oscars (real soft spot for these amazing animals) but also other ciclids, discus, murray/sleepy cod and australian bass to name a few. I like to diy as much as i can to save those dollarydoo's and I simply find it more rewarding to tackle these projects myself.
Now I have that out of the way ill get down to busness, I have had this project on my mind for the past 4 years or so I just havent had the confidence to tackle it uptill now.
We have an awkward raised and tiled section of concrete in the corner of our lounge area that i suspect was at some stage the base for a fireplace. The area just short of 4ft sq and it is 8" high. We have tried over the years to disguise it but our attempts have pretty much failed....
So I thought why not build an aquarium there!
The plan is plywood and glass with 2 veiwing panels and a fluidised bed filter plumbed though the wall into our garage to keep the noise down.
At present I am roughing up cut lines on the ply and have a few other bits and peices handy to make a start on led lighting and the filtration.
As usual glass is the big IF lol I've used garf in the past and never had an issue but this time it is throwing me a curve ball lol
When I input my dimensions 36L 36W 18D into garf this is what I end up with -
Material = Plywood w/ Glass
Tank Height = 18"
Tank Width = 36"
Tank Length = 36 "
Plywood w/ Glass Thickness = 3/4"
Approximate Gallons = 101
Material = Glass
Tank Height = 18"
Tank Width = 36"
Tank Length = 36 "
Glass Thickness = 1/4"
Approximate Gallons = 101
Now if i go of the glass only criteria YAY! Because i have 1/4" panes at the required size but I am unsure why there would be suge a lage difference. I may be missing the obvious here and the answer may be simple but currently it has me a bit stuck. Either way im not too fussed if i have to buy thicker glass, its just the way these things go.
Anyways just thought I would start this now so I can continue to record my progress as this project goes forward. But for now more measuring/marking and hopefully get some good weather this weekend to start cutting.
Cheers guys,
wilso
