Plywood sump with no glass?

I am thinking of building a sump to fit in my stand for a 180g and would like to make it with plywood. Has anyone had any issues with building a sump with plywood and no glass? I like the thought of being able to see whats going on in the sump but too cheap to put glass/acrylic in just to look at media. The approximate measurements would be 60"Lx16"Dx18"H.

I made mine out of plywood and incorporated an algae scrubber too.
