it's been at least a decade since i've read about plywood tanks... what's the final breakdown of a plywood tank?

  • do they work?
  • do they last?
  • do's and don'ts? (how many horror stories?)
  • is fiberglass coating poisonous to fish? (i've tested it on rosey reds with success but i'm reading it's poison to fish)

I think a search answers most of these.

1 - yes, seems a bit of a no brainer.
2 - yes, if they're done with some care.
3 - too long to go into, too many different ways to do it, do a search.
4 - Fiberglass coating is NOT poisonous to fish. I'm not sure where this rumor started, but it's caused a lot of people to spend a lot of extra money on epoxy coatings. Fiberglass has worked for many people including myself.

i am in the process of building a 180gal outta plywood, i also was looking at buying epoxy coatings they are like 125bucks per 2gal kit. i am looking for an aqua marine color i live in AK so getting anything special is a *****. can you tint the epoxy resin/hardener? i don't want a wood grain look inside. should i paint it then do to clear epoxy coat?

I tinted my epoxy black with some pigment from uscomposites.com. You can also tint polyester resins (fiberglass resin/gelcoat) It's much cheaper and commonly available.

i personally will ask a question that goes with the title of the thread-does anyone have one for a decade?same tank-a decade later?no problems/leaks etc?
