For those of you who've built plywood tanks, if the bottom is made of 3/4" plywood, does this need to be entirely supported on the stand? In other words, does the stand need to have a solid plywood top, or can the tank just rest on the outside frame and crossbeams of the stand?

I have mine sitting on the plywood top of the stand. You are dealing with several hundred gallons of water, why risk failure over a $25 sheet of plywood?
If im building a 300gtank would I neccesarily need 2x4 supports for the sides and back? Ive seen tanks done with and w/o actual supports. I plan to start building mine tomorrow and Im just gathering as much opinions as i can
I have seen tanks in that range where the sides were glued and screwed using 3/4"+ plywood but it is not something I am willing to try. I am working on installing the viewing widnow in a 315G and it has exterior framing. I'm not bold enough to go unsupported!
For my 240 I am doing unsupported plywood. 8x2x2. It is not recomended to do a ply only tank over 24".
I also would not do any larger than I have in ply only. At least not 3/4". I would maybe do like Grossgraphix and do 1.5" (2 sheets doubled up).

Actually, the tank I'm considering this for is going to be a much smaller project. Roughly 48"X28" footprint and only about 90 gallons of water. I'm thinking of including some struts on the tank bottom which will line up and fit between the cross beams on the stand so that will line up perfectly with the stand.
