I'm making a temporary holding tank for my KIO. I thought of using a liner over the plywood but I put a bulk head in the bottom bad idea with a liner it leaked bad. So I'm going to make it like a plywood tank. My question is how do I seal the bulkhead threw the plywood or should I scratch the hole drain idea on the bottom and just hang some pvc over the side.:nilly:

Drill the bottom so the bulkhead just screws into the hole, seal the plywood like usual, then install the unit using the rubber gasket that should have come with the bulkhead connector. Do not use silicone on any of the parts...use teflon tape on the threads, and do not over-tighten.

This should also have worked with the liner.

If the hole is too big, silicone the bulkhead in and let it cure for 3-4 days.

Keep us posted,

Dr Joe

Drill the hole, put a thick bead of silicone around the perimeter of the hole, insert bulkhead, tighten down until it is about 1/16"-1/8" from tight, let dry for 3 days, turn nut on bulkhead about 1/2-1 turn. That's how I did them on my 540 plywood and they haven't leaked yet.

why put the bulkhead on the bottom? why not on the back or sidewalls?...a few inches from the top, and then do a pvc "Z"shaped overflow pipe that will rotate on its axis where it connects with the bulkhead. That way you can control the water level and if it leaks....at least it won't empty the tank to the bottom & kill all your fish....something like this:

A drain for the garbage on the bottom?

Not that koi are messy...

I like Guinness idea mainly because thats what i did when i mad my first filter box for my pond..., i cut a 4' hole in a garbage can and incerted two toilet bulkheads, the one outside with a 5" hole and the one on the inside with a 3"hole for the pipe with the liner on the outside of the garbage can between the can and the 5"bulkhead with a big helping of sillicone between all layres let it cure for a bit and tightened, this worked perfectly but i decided to junk the idea, and go with a bigger box.

That's a top idea, what did you use for the mesh part?
