I'm drawing up plans for stackable 36" L x 18" W x 18" H reptile enclosures. I first considered using 3/4" oak plywood, but realized just how heavy each of the 4 units would end up being if constructed entirely out of the 3/4" plywood.

What would you suggest as the minimum thickness plywood for stackable cages? Could I use 1/2" plywood or 1/4" plywood with furring strips for added support without having to worry about the plywood sagging or the sides collapsing under the weight of the cages above?

If you use firring strips to make a frame, then 1/4" will be plenty strong. In addition to screwing it together, use some wood glue too. You'll be surprised how strong they will be.

So 1/4" + furring strips will allow me to safely stack 4 enclosures on top of one another without worrying about the bottom enclosures getting crushed?

Sorry for being so redundant, but I kind of need this assurance :(

On a lighter note, reduced weight (from around 225 lbs for the total structure using 3/4" to around 75 lbs using 1/4") as well as reduced cost (50% less!) would be absolutely awesome if I could use the 1/4" :grinno:
