so let me get this right this fish is a variant of convict? this is what im gettin from online articles. if so give me a little insite on these fish such as temperment and such?
There are several species of Central American fish that all look very similar and are often referred to as "Convicts"... Most of our aquarium strains of "Convicts" are likely hybrids of these species...
Honduran Red Points are a similar species to those commonly referred to as Convicts in both appearance, behavior and aggression. To my knowledge the HRP's are an undescribed species of Amatitlania.
They don't get as large as "regular" convicts. I've got a breeding pair and they are very cool. I have them in a 55g with another male HRP, L14 pleco, baby synodontis, and a 2" jag. There used to be two more HRP's, but the breeding pair killed them over the period of a year or so when they used to be in a 30g (5 HRP's and the pleco in the 30g).
In the last year or so, the genus Archocentrus has been restricted to just 3 species
A centrarchus, multispiosus and spinosissimus.
The convict types have been switched to Cryptoheros, although a new genus (as stated above , Amatitlania), is now being suggested for "some" of these.
And may already be considered true.
This happened around the same time the Jack Demsey has been switched to the genus Rocio.
So DuaneS... Did HRP's move over to the Cryptoheros Genus with the "Convict" species? and were they suggested to move over to the Amatitlania Genus along with the "Convict" species?
I will admit, all of this relabeling can give me a headache. As a hobbyist I'm never sure what reference material is the most "up to date"... or "official"...
But I think the best answer to the OP's question is... HRP's are a different species of fish than Convicts... but are very similar in appearance, behavior and aggression... Also add in as Terd suggested, they don't get quite as big (although there is a wide range that a "full grown Convict" may fall into).
The 5 convict species were Amatitlania once the paper was published since it was a valid scientific genus description. To move them back, another paper would have to be published refuting the validity of Amatitlania and putting the 5 back into Cryptoheros. I have heard that such a paper was being worked on, and might even be out now ... but if so I haven't seen it.
Darth pike beat me to the punch line, the flip flopping of papers is reason why I was vague.
Google Zootaxa, A systematic revision of the genus Archocentrus with a the description of two new genera and six new species by Juan J. Schmitter-Soto, for the one paper.
So yes, HRPs are considerd a different species. But for our purposes, treated buch like the others in the convict group.
How bout this one, we've considered this cutteri in the hobby, but now it's species status is at the least, precarious.
