this may be pointless but i know gars are illegal in cali but what about the hybrids?

The way the law is written is:
Lepisosteidae - All Gars

It does not distinguish Atractosteus from Lepisosteus or mixtures of them. it is a Family wide restriction. Even if a new species was described and given a new genus name it would still be illegal if placed under the family Lepisosteidae.
