So... there doesn't seem to be many facts about these little cichlids. Lots of debate on whether they are a hybrid Parrot x Honduran Red Point, a selectively bred version of the Honduran Red Point, or other manner of things. Debate all you want, no one knows for sure. But they appear to breed true like the Flowerhorns.

I also found there to be a lot of conflicting info on adult size, growth rate, temperament etc. So I thought it would be fun to document my two I've just brought in a mini journal here... hope someone finds it interesting?

20 Gallon
25C / 77F
External cannister 150GpH
Low tech planted (anubias and moss balls)
Dither fish (black neons, very old now)

I'll add photos and updates each month tracking progress.

So... October 2022.
4cm including finnage.
No aggression yet.
No idea of sex yet.

Love the Journal idea and you have PERFECT ones for this journal since they don't appear to have any con in them. Very clean HRP colors. Will be excited to see the data you have over a year.

So after 1 month... not much growth length ways.. but they look chunkier for sure. Turns out I have a male and female. The male is 5.5cm and female 5cm.

Interestingly the male got lighter and the female darker in blue colour. And of course they've spawned already in true HRP fashion! Great looking specimens though compared to other polar parrots I've seen.

What are the main distictions between these and the Convict PBP?

The big visible difference is colour. Good quality/pure HRP PBPs are rather blue in the body and possess good colours in their finnage (orange/yellow). The convict mixed PBPs are very much more white bodied with black bars and lack the nice colours.

I believe PBPs were always supposed to be based on HRPs... hence the name 'blue polar'... but convict breeding has leaked in...

Can't wait to give you all another monthly update in a few weeks. Their colours are really coming along and they've had some rapid growth with a change onto high protein food.

Sorry for the late update. In summary of the latest...

The male has boomed to 8cm now whilst the female is still around 5.5cm. Both have got very chunky but the male also has some lovely colours showing on his finnage now. I suspect he'll grow a hump at some point too. To think, they are still so young and have so much growing to do.

Behaviour wise, the male is certainly a lot more aggressive than the female, but both remain good patents to their now 6 week old fry. Of which there are still around 18 of them who swim freely now but school together lovely.
