I bought a fin nor 9500 60 lb of drag. I was planing on putting 100 or 150 lb of braid line, due to river fishing so the rocks dont tear it up to fast. I,m going salt water fishing, But i like to catch catfish i do that often, I would really like to hook a monster gar or cat
over the years i have had reals, poles, and line broken by some kind of monster fish. and also have been spooled, I really hated that with 30lb line on my penn and drag was set at a little over 20 I all most cryed lol.

I boat and bank fish so i was thinking 7 to 8 ft so i could cast that heavy line when bank fishing. any more than 8 I think would be way to big to have in a boat.
so what size max line rating pole do ya think would be a good match?
I was thinking 60lb pole due to max drag of 60lb. or bigger mabey?
Help

One bad thing I see with using 100-150lb test, when you get a snag, you got to cut your line because the line wont break. I use between 80-100lb Power Pro, which I think has a 20lb diameter. I think the best thing going for catfish is a nice Abu baitcaster with a bait clicker. I have 3 myself just for catfishing. The pole I use is 6'6" extra heavy musky rod. Im not a fan of 12' foot poles at lakes just for catfish, I can see a 12' pole while striper fishing the dam trying to get your bait down to the 3rd lock but thats about it. Keep fishing the river, you will end uo hooking a big ole flat or blue one of your outings. Gar fishing is fun, I usually catch them on mono and a single hook, Im going to try treble this weekend. I told myself I was going to buy a rod and reel with braid just for gar since a lot of times their teeth slice right though it. I had a monter gar on Monday, over 20lbs easily in a creek. I wish I had it on video, was a like a smallie rocketing out of the water with teeth. Im going back tomorrow for him, hoping I can get him to the bank, photo and release.

Use a steal leeder for gar or mabey 80lb mono leader. mono is tougher to cut with something sharp than braid.

I was thinking of using a 6 foot leader of 80lb mono at the end of 100 to 150 for a weeker spot for snags. what ya think.

Not sure why ya said not a fan of 12 footer's. I said I was thinking 7 to 8 foot. A 12 footer is great, if ya live were you can surf fish, but thats about it. unless its a snagin pole but that would be way to much work, lol

I said 12 footers because a lot of people use them to catfish, when they try to set the hook the have to pick the pole up and run back with it, doesnt make sense to me when a pole half the size would work better. Yea surf fishing would be different for a pole that big, I could def see using that.

I dont use leaders, especially steel leaders, to me, its the waekest link between you and the fish. I have had too many steel leaders break at the clamp, clamp come off, etc. Just dont trust them.

I guess that 6 foot mono leader would work, you would have to test it out, trial and error.
