Can you use polished stones in an aquarium? I don't know how they polish them so I don't have a clue. I am looking to get some Petoskey stones to add to my tank. You can see the pattern so much better on polished ones so I need to find out.

Thank you.

Theres no real reason that you can't use polished stones in an aquarium. Stones are polished by running through a tumbler with progressivly finer grit.

What my hubby failed to point out is that we bought some polished stones.. spent $5 on a bag 1/4 the size of the usual pond pebbles we buy for the substrate for $3, put them in the tank and you can't tell they are any different than the pond pebbles when they are wet. Waste of $5.:irked:

Polished agates are fine. Petoskey stones are fossilized coral/limestone and will raise your tank's pH. If your fish prefer neutral to acidic conditions, find other polished rocks.

Truly polished stone , other than what Oddball said. are fine...Just look closely to make sure they just don't have a coat of clear put on the to make them shine. Cheap stones from the dollar stores and some yuppy design stores use this treatment.

1.5-2" black polished stones at my lfs in 20lb bags. i rinsed them really good under running water on a screen and used in my 55 g last year. looks great but remeber waste will slip thru the gaps which means a little more cleaning ;) .
good luck.

I'm just going to use a few for decor, not as a substrate,,,, so that won't be a problem.

Thanks.
