In Mo's discussion thread on how the ACA should deal with hybrids and line bred (i.e. man made) fish, we came to some level of agreement that IRRESPONSIBLE care, breeding, and distribution/sale of both wild-type and man-made fish is the biggest problem and that the ACA should focus on encouraging responsible fishkeeping / distribution by both hobbyists and vendors.

I threw out the idea of a VOLUNTARY certification program for fish stores and other vendors of (both) wild-type and man-made fish.

If a fish store or online fish vendor received certification ("stamp of approval") from the ACA for upholding RESPONSIBLE PRACTICES, would you:

i personally dont like the idea of it. to me, it seems as an excuse for a vendor to jack up their prices just because they have this so-called "certification". but thats just my $0.02

I already pay more to support the independant lfs versus the chain stores, so a touch more wouldn't matter to me. But then, if my fav lfs didn't have the cert or was even discouraged by the ACA, I'd still go there due to inventory of rarer species, so I guess overwall it wouldn't impact me too much one way or another.

how would this organization be able to do these bi-monthly checks that someone suggested?

thats a lot of lfs to patrol let alone the money and man power it would take to keep it going c'mon

Assume that it was a fairly rigorous certification that was for two years and could be revoked based on bad feedback (i.e. complaints, bad conduct, etc.)

Also assume that LFS would pay a small fee to defray certification costs

that = higher prices for the consumer. no thanks! im sure some would support this, but stuff is expensive as it is :nilly:

also, most aquarium hobby organizations don't have the funds or source of funds to be able conduct these procedures

In my area alone there are close to 120 fish stores...

It would have to be somthing government regulated to even stand a chance, and by the sounds of it would require fish stores to charge more anyway.

I just try to find knowledgable LFS around here and buy through them...when I do use an LFS
