Hi all

Looking for votes and experiences. I have a 7 foot by 2.5 foot by 2.5 foot tank with currently just an oscar and a Jardini aro. I would like to add 1 more fish into this set up. The jar and oscar do go at it at times but nothing too serious from the jar. The jar is about 13.5" right now, and oscar is about 10 or 11 inches.

The fish will eventually be moved when it is big enough to do so into a pond set up so tank police please refrain from commenting.

I am really wanting to keep a fish I have not kept before and these are some ideas I was considering. If you have an idea for an addition I have not listed, post as a comment?

Is the fish for after they leave or is it going to be housed with them for life?

It will be housed with them. Looking to add another fish to this tank with the existing stock and grow them out more together until they all can go in the pond

I’d pass on the above options then. Tigerfish, puffers, and payara all pose massive risks to tankmates.
If the pond is big enough, what about a pacu?

Not a fan of pacu in all honesty. Not a very attractive fish in my opinion and with this tank being in the wall behind my bar, really looking for an oddball predator or something unique

Any recommendations?
None of the above.
I didn't expect payara to be a no go with tankmates. They are so common in most predator set ups.

Other than the obvious of potential to injure fish that are food sized, is it an aggression issue?

Smaller rays or polys?
Problem is that jars are typically psychopaths and most predators could kill both the Oscar and jar.
Maybe a shoal of leporinus?

The oscar can be moved if this would open the door to other fish...

I have more rays than I care to admit at the moment and will be getting more soon ?.

Not trying to be picky or anything! Just the last bit of "space" I have for a good size fish for a while and really wanting to try something I haven't kept before. I have had less issues with my jar the more fish that are in the tank. When I was growing out some silver dollars, a few flowerhorn and some silver arowanas, and had them all packed together, he was a poster child for good behavior. As the tankmates have been moved, he has been getting greedy but always calms down when I have to move a big fish back in with him.

No Oscar opens up space for another fish, but it doesn’t stop that any predator could still kill the jar.
