Greetings.... Here are the basics:

I have a 150 (72x18x28) currently filtered with 2 XP3's and an AC110. The AC while I admit I love, recently has been making some noise. Tried to clean it up...but its still on its way out!

The tank is stocked with about 25 Haps and Peacocks!

I am thinking about replacing the AC with either a Sump or a Fluval FX5. What would you do...and why?

What are the pros and cons?

sumps are my favorite easy to clean and all equiptment can be put in the sump out of the tank.
FX5 are huge and heavy & i dont like taking canisters apart and cleaning them.

i run a sump and a fx5 on all my large tanks over 100 gallons, best filter combo in my experience. sump= better bio, fx5= better mechanical(both together =great filtration) since you already have canisters run a sump. btw i have never had a heavy fx5.

Isn't that what a wife is for? Put her to work! Haha JK :grinno:

I know people that go a LONG time between maintenance on their FX5s, their tanks are great.

I'd keep the XP3s and add a sump/tricklefilter... then you have a good combination of bio/aeration and mechnical filtration.
That's what I have on my 180.

fx5 on both 125's, one is heavily stocked mixed african tank, other is frontosa tank with 3 small fronts and 4 even smaller clown loaches. both tanks are very clean(crispy!) i clean my fx5 every 3 months, and 30% water change every other week. love my fx5,s
