Hello all. I had a 2 inch polleni growing in my 27 gallon tank with some catfish and a equally sized geophagus surinamensis. I knew that they were getting to be of the size where territory was becoming an issue but thought they were still okay. Today I cam home to find the geophagus looking pretty beat up and sitting on the bottom. I have a 25 gallon tank with only a Chinese algae eater in it right now or a 100 gallon tank with a large JD and a large Nile Tilapia. I was hoping that sooner or later I would be able to put the polleni in with those two potentialy. They also leave tons of tiny scraps of food when they eat which would be good for a smaller fish to clean up. What should I do with the polleni? Do I put in the 25 gallon or try it out with the big guys like I was planning on when it grew a little larger? I have also added salt and melafix to my 27 gal to hopefully allow the geophagus to recover from his very rough day. Please tell me your thoughts. Thanks!

why not place a divider in the tank they're in now. Eventually it should go ok with the bigger guys. What's with the unusual gallonage on those tanks (25 and 27)?

Good idea on the divider. It might be a little challenge with all the plants, wood and rock but it is a good option for sure. The tank they are in right now is a bowfront. That might explain the 27 weird gallonage. The other I calculated approx using size since it was given to me. Any other thoughts on this? What size do you add smaller cichlids to with larger ones?

My polleni has killed every tank mate hes ever been with... Gave up after a few years... Hes now been living alone in a 60G for over 16 years and still tough as nails...

how large are the dempsey and tilapia? you might have to wait quite some time before introducing the polleni

The Dempsy is about 6 inches and the tilapia is 8. He just keeps on growing that guy and eats, and eats, and eats. They are a bit of an odd couple. I'm gonna go to my pet shop right now and see if I can get me a divider or make my own. Seems simple enough. Kinda messes up my tank but c'est la vie. Please keep any info coming! Always good to hear about others and their experiences.

Wow those other two are much bigger than the polleni. he wouldnt be able to hold his own just yet. give him another 3" or growth or so. i have a 5" polleni with a 7" jack but they grew up together. but it should work in the future. you could try the 25g to grow him out a bit more. i would say at 5" ur good with the jack but i couldnt say on nile tilapia.
