My pair of P. Polleni spawn every month. After about 4 times i pulled the eggs last time. They have always eaten them on the second day. The egg mass fungased , but i managed one fry. I would like to see the parents raise the fry but i think it maybe hopeless. Any thoughts?

the male will sometimes eat the eggs just so he can breed again. usualy its the female that eats the eggs that are unfertile. there the white ones. if the eggs stay long enough to fungus chances are the male is missing his mark or unfertile. but you said you actualy got 1 fry so im at a loss kinda. it may be possible there like humans and the sperm count could be very low. hes blowing his load but its stunt jizz if that makes sense. just ideas.

pol2.jpgAre they a young pair? Mine didn't breed until they were about 2 years old but they are very fertile, don't eat their eggs, and will tend to the young for several weeks. Also, I have them in a 180G with several other Madagascar cichlids and the presence of other fish seems to have resulted in a strong pair bond. Here's a pic of the pair with young.

super pair

I use to breed them with very good success. I do take the eggs out every time. After they are finished laying for a couple hours, you can take the eggs out. At that time I had a heated room. I would put the eggs in a glass 1 gallon jar with slow air bubbles. The main trick is to be able to keep the new born fries alive by separating the viable eggs from the fungus eggs. If you don't do that, the bad eggs will fungus up and make the water go bad. That will kill off everything. So when the you shake the egg mass on the second day in the jar, the good eggs will fall down and the bad eggs will stay with the original mass. The key is to remove the bad eggs before they decompose and foul the water. On the second day, the eggs will start to lose the adhesion to the egg mass which allow you to shake the good ones off. You will have to take out the bad eggs which is stuck to the original mass. The babies can be raised just like any other cichlid babies. Good Luck.
