I brought what i was hoping would be a pair Polleni at the convention and all was going well for the first week or so but then the male decided he wants the female dead. He tore her up pretty badly so i removed her from the tank. She is currently resting in my tank with my 2 Pearsi. My question is what should I do? I'm going to leave her there until she heals but want to try it again but when? I was really looking forward to breeding something on the CARES list and thought these guys would be fun. The male is about 3 inches and the female 2.

Congrats on the sweet pickup! How big is the tank? Those are rough fish, they need some room.Id keep them separated by a divider and let them grow a bit. Some kind of target fish to draw thier ire.

They were in a 90 together with 3 menarambo but I took the female out last night. I felt she needed a break from the male. I hope that wasn't a mistake but she probably would be dead if i hadn't removed her. All of the fish are small so I was hoping it would work.

The male may have turned on her because she didn't want to spawn. I may be wrong but I believe they are not sexually mature until they reach 2.5", which would make her just slightly too small. Either way what happened isn't at all uncommon, the bond between a pair of Polleni is easily broken and at any time they can just up and decide to kill one another. If it were me I would try to reintroduce her again once she has grown some and had time to healed up, perhaps with a divider at first.

They're truly a beautiful fish though. My mother currently has five of them at her house which I will probably be bringing home with me sooner or later. I've actually already had to bring one female back home with me because the male beat her up pretty badly and she didn't have any tanks open to move her into. Best of luck though and I hope she makes a recovery.

She's doing fine. Actually likes being in with my pair of Pearsi. Its kind of funny because she is so small compared to the 2 of them. They don't seem the least bit bothered by her presence in the tank though so I think I will leave her were she is for awhile.

That sounds like the best idea to me. I would just give her time to grow out some before I try to introduce her again. She should be fine with your Pearsi, from what I have read Polleni are only really conspecifically aggressive and do alright with other species (as far as cichlids go.) I know the female I have runs from the firemouths I have her with haha.

They are very aggressive to each other. I have had much better luck keeping them in 6ft tanks as trio's with a large group of paretroplus or in my pond. At 3" you are just seeing normal cichlid aggression. They try to eleminate any other like cichlids in there space. They are not nearly mature enough to breed. Mine also do not stay bonded. My male will pair with one female and breed. He usually shortly after that starts trying to beat up the female he just bred with and pairs up with the other one. The female will probably need to be 5" or more to breed. My male is around 8-9" and my females are 6-7".
