Polly vs parachanna obscura

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello,

what polys do you imagine to keep together with Parachanna obscura?

Obscura grows very fast and is able to eat very big fish - the fish you will keep together should have more than the half size of the obscura (better 2/3).
I've seen obscuras kept together with endlis in the same size. I think this will work, also lapradei, ornatipinnis, teugelsi and congicus in a safe size.
Other bichirs (like senegalus, polli, palmas, retropinnis) maybe food in the future.

Thanks for the reply

i have 4 senegalus i know its a risk but in my readigs i saw that in aquarium this parachanna doesn´t get much larger than senegalus and i would love to have some ornates too

Hello,

obscuras with 40cm kept here in Germany aren't rare ... and they grow very very fast!

I think it will not work with your senegalus. The obscura will be larger than your senegalus in a short time.
I'm also keeping snakeheads (gachua and pulchra) and have searched for as much informations about Channa i could get. There are more insectivorious and more carnivorious (in the meaning of fish-eating) species. Parachanna obscura (now named Channa obscura) is a fish-eater.
My Channa pulchra is also a fish-eater with enormous abilities about the size of the feeders - he eats a feeder of 2/3 size in less than a second ... in a rapid fast way you cannot see how!
I'm keeping him with Senegalus, Weeksi and Ornatipinnis and the sizes of all fish are comfortable - any smaller fish would be eaten by the Pulchra.
But Obscura is another story! They are known to be very agressive and wild hunters ... and known for their rapid growing!

Greetings

Uwe

its risky obscura are one of the more aggressive snakeheads and like all can eat pretty big fish with senegals its a pretty big risk it could work but its all up to the snakehead that being said theres a pretty big chance of the polys getting killed or eaten hope it works out for you

parachanna obscura is the african snakehead.
as stated,it can eat very big fish nearly its own size and grow very fast.
they are also one of the more aggressive snakeheads.
