Long time aquarist here moving up from the world of 12" wide tanks in the process of setting up a 40B. I'd like to keep something a little bigger than what I'm used to with the extra space I've got, and am thinking about getting a poly. Species would likely be Delhezi, but a Senegal or other small species would be considered depending on LFS's availability. Considering the tank will be in my living room, I want some activity in the tank though, and am thinking of getting a pair of angelfish as well. I've read that polys and angels usually get along as long as the angels are big enough. The tank will be heavily planted and will have an AC500 for filtration. I know the 16" deep tank isn't ideal for angels, and the 36" length isn't ideal for polys either, but based on my research this combo should be okay, however I want to run it by someone to be sure.

Specs
40B
AC500
Heavily planted
2x Angelfish
1x Poly

Is this okay?

If that's the absolute largest footprint you could get, then I'd get an albino senegalus, as they usually don't grow very large.

I mean i personally dont really like to see bichirs in that size tank no matter the species, but if you must i would go a long the lines of senegalus, and i have 2 semi-adult angels with a full grown senegalus and a 6-8" p. palmas polli, in a 180 gallon with no problems, also with a full grown BGK haha, in those videos it looks like the angelfish may have already died and it found its body, but idk i wasnt there to say other wise. However they were small and i know most people can order in larger angels.

It should be good just try and get one of the smaller UJ at a smaller size and either grow the anglefish out a little or buy some already larger ones. If you wanted to get something other than the common senegals I would suggest something like a mokelembembe, because they stay relatively small and aren't usually as active as senegalus

I currently have a senegal growing out in a 55 gallon with 6 angels they have been together about 3 months with no issues. He is around 7" now and they are silver dollar sized. (he will soon be moving in with my other sens in the 125)

Lots of people recommending senegals, is the difference between them and a delhezi significant enough to warrant the bigger tank? I really don't like to cramp my fish. If I were to get senegals, would it be okay to keep 2? Or would that not give them each enough space?

If I do get angels, I would anticipate getting larger (2-3") size ones to begin with. I'm still weighing my options.

Really the only reason sens are suggested it because they seems to only max at about 8"-10" and some not even getting there. Delhezi on the other hand get around the same size and sometimes a little bigger. I would say you could keep 2 senegals, but really I wouldn't recommend any more than that and 2 might be pushing it with potential sizes. If you really were to want a delhezi then you could manage to put one in there, but it would be borderline of cramped. So if you are more worried about the well being and space the fish has I would recommend 1 Senegal and maybe a second with a planted set-up like you are going to have.
